Major careers event in Gloucestershire for fifth year running

Stroud Ambitions, one of the county's largest careers events, is being held at Stratford Park next week.

The three-hour event offers a unique opportunity for adults and young people to talk to experts and employers from a wide range of businesses and organisations.

Schools, universities and colleges will be represented among the many stalls, as well as companies looking to full job vacancies and offer apprenticeships.

Experts will be on hand to talk about a wide range of employment sectors including working in construction, where there is a shortage of skilled staff, sport and leisure, care work, catering, hairdressing, the emergency services, medicine, the law, media and many others. Manufacturing and engineering will be represented by several local employers including Renishaw.

There will be up to 70 stalls there with experts from 30 employment sectors providing hands-on advice about their line of work and training requirements. Independent careers advisers, apprenticeship providers, community groups and Job Centre Plus will also be on hand.

Councillor Steve Lydon, leader of Stroud District Council, said: "Whether you want to learn what employability skills are required in future careers, find a new job, take your first step on the career ladder or retrain for a new career, there will be something for you at Ambitions."

The event on Wednesday, November 8 has been organised by Stroud District Council in partnership with South Gloucestershire and Stroud College and will be free to attend.

Fiona Doughton, of Engineering UK, has attended Ambitions every year since it started. She said: "We know that for many people, knowing what you want to do in the future is really difficult, there are just so many choices and the jobs can be quite similar or really different.

"It is also challenging to understand about the different paths that you can take - do I want an apprenticeship, would I prefer more education and maybe university?

"Ambitions brings together a wide range of job roles and industries, all under one roof, with people to ask about the different paths, so that you can explore all of your ideas and compare them with each other.

"You may still be undecided at the end of the evening, but you will be very much better informed, and the decision that will eventually be made will be a better decision."

The event runs from 4.30 - 7.30pm. Further information is available at www.stroudambitions.co.uk  by emailing ambitions@stroud.gov.uk  or by calling 01453 754296.
