Major aircraft accident to close Gloucestershire Airport

Emergency services battled to save 25 passengers on board an aircraft at Gloucestershire Airport as smoke billowed across the runway.

An ATR72 aircraft, which can hold up to 72 passengers, got into difficulties after landing and overshot the runway after arriving at the airport at 6.15pm.

But there is no need to panic - if you are reading this before Thursday, April 19, the incident has not happened yet.

What we are describing is the planned live exercise to test emergency response plans should such an incident ever happen at the Staverton airport.

Those driving past along either the Golden Valley bypass or on the B4063 on Thursday just after 6pm will more than likely see fire, smoke and all kinds of commotion as actors play the parts of the passengers while real emergency services crew complete the live drill.

They should not be alarmed.

The aircraft is of a type seen during Cheltenham Festival when the horse racing event turns the Gloucestershire site into the busiest airport in the country for the week.
