M&S to sell more high street brands

Marks & Spencer is set to sell more third-party fashion online, alongside its own clothing lines.

The move is a bid to entice shoppers away from high-street rivals Next and John Lewis, as reported by Retail Gazette.

It's thought that M&S, which has stores in Cheltenham and Gloucester, is planning to increase the number of third-party brands it sells from 60 to 100.

It has already started selling clothes from brands including Hobbs, Joules, White Stuff and Ted Baker.

Predictions are that third-party sales at M&S could eventually reach £1bn - almost 10% of total sales for the retailer, which last year hit £10.9bn.

M&S started selling brands two years ago and has enjoyed significant growth from shoppers looking for high-street names on its site.

The retailer isn't just focusing on fashion for the future and is also looking to sell more beauty, sportswear and homeware from third parties.

In the three months to the end of December, sales of third-party brands at Mark & Spencer were up 50%.

M&S still has a long way to go before it rivals Next - which has gone from 500 third-party brands to 1,000 in around three years.
