Locals 'petrified' as man walks into Cirencester pub with Samurai sword

Locals in a Cirencester pub were "petrified" when a man strode in with a Samurai sword strapped to his back, a court was told yesterday.

David Davies, 57, of Querns Road, Cirencester, pleaded guilty at Cheltenham Magistrates Court to possessing a bladed article in a public place - The Marlborough Arms, Sheep Street - on October 13.

Prosecuting lawyer May Li said "The defendant walked into the pub at around 8.30pm with the Samurai sword.

"He showed the sword to a man in the pub, Jack Roberts, who told him that he ought to be careful because if the police saw him with the sword he would be in trouble."

Davies said to Mr Roberts "**** the police" - but was subsequently arrested, the court heard.

Davies told police that his girlfriend did not like the sword so he took it to the pub to try to sell it.

Defending lawyer Tim Burrow said: "My client had been drinking at the time. He did not brandish the sword in any way."

District Judge Joti Bopa-Rai told Davies: "So many people are dying from stabbings that the law is very strict about possessing such weapons, especially when they are taken into a public place.

"People in the pub must have been petrified when they saw your sword."

Davies was given a 16-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months, placed on a community order for a year and ordered to pay £85 prosecution costs.
