Local businesses to raise £40m to regenerate Cheltenham

More than half a dozen local businesses have joined forces to redefine development and regeneration in Cheltenham

Headed up by Team Cheltenham Properties Ltd, the consortium is aimed at supporting local business income, job creation and keeping investment in the region.

The consortium said it is set to raise £40m to invest in key property developments and projects in the town.

Team Cheltenham includes local property developers, architects, planning specialists, surveyors, solicitors, accountants, estate agents and investors, with a focus on building luxurious homes to attract wealth into the area.

The partnership has already raised millions towards its multi-million-pound target and aims to develop properties which blend retail spaces with community-focused open areas.

Committed to keeping contracts local to Cheltenham to support the growth of the economy, it uses only the specialist skills of professionals and tradespeople based in the region, while also giving back to the local community.

A percentage of the profits raised from Team Cheltenham projects will be given to local charities, including children's cancer charity, Emily's Gift, the Public Hearts Cheltenham defibrillator campaign, and National Star.

Largely driven by developers from outside of the region, over the last decade Cheltenham has seen a number of new developments take shape, which have brought new investment to previously underused and tired parts of the town.

Most recently, the green light was given to the £55m redevelopment of North Place car park which will see 147 new homes built by Birmingham-based Wavensmere Homes and London-based BBS Capital.

Max Wright, founder and director at Team Cheltenham Properties, said: "As a proud Cheltonian that has lived and worked here all my life, it's fantastic to see the ongoing investment in and regeneration of Cheltenham, but what we'd like to see is the redevelopment driven by those who care most about the town.

"Our mission, along with our eight business partners, is simple. We want to develop the town exclusively with local talent, ensuring that every penny invested stays within Cheltenham. We're not just developers, we're supporting local tradesmen, creating jobs, security and incomes, and giving back to the community that has given us so much.

"Our goal is to deliver stability and opportunities to hundreds of local independent tradespeople, while also generating over 100 new jobs. At Team Cheltenham we want to leave a lasting legacy, one that honours Cheltenham's rich history and contributes to its bright future."

Punchline-Gloucester.com said: "This is a fantastic project, with local businesses clubbing together to keep it local. However, the reality is that the council has to go for the best value for the council and the town, which might not always be from a local business.

"While we applaud them for the initiative, the big question is where is the £40 million going to come from?"
