Linda's marathon cycle ride for Ukraine
By David Wood | 11th March 2022
A Newent woman is aiming to cycle to the UK's four capital cities to raise money for the British Red Cross DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.
Linda Dorman is setting off from London on Sunday for the start of her 1100-mile journey, accompanied by her husband Richard, who will ride alongside her with no support vehicle.
The couple will aim to ride up the east coast of England up to Edinburgh before getting a ferry over to Belfast and then returning and pedalling to Cardiff before coming back to Gloucestershire. They expect the ride to take about three weeks in all.
Linda, aged 55, said: "Let's make one thing clear, I am no cyclist so this won't be easy for me and I'm carrying all my stuff. Everybody's got a different Mount Everest. This could be mine.
"I've only done little bike rides before. I go out on a weekday with a few friends but I've never done this sort of mileage. And I'm no spring chicken."
Linda said she was moved to do the challenge after watching the heartbreaking images of Ukraine on television.
"It's just horrific what's going on. It breaks your heart every time you see the pictures come through. You just think 'how can this be?' They haven't done anything to deserve it.
"Even if the ride is hard for me, it will be nothing compared to what the Ukrainians are going through."
Linda added: "I've got an E-bike but it only works if you are pedalling. My husband doesn't have any assistance apart from his legs. And we will have to carry everything we want to take.
"Richard is brilliant. He's a true supporter - he will be my chief navigator and my chief back-up crew. The plan is to just do it all in one go. If it's just raining, that's fine."
