Lidl opens 860th British store

Lidl has opened its 860th store in Great Britain and is on track to have 1,000 stores by the end of 2023.

Lidl's £1.3 billion investment plan for 2021 and 2022 includes opening 50 new stores this year alone, with the creation of 2,000 new jobs, as reported by Retail Gazette.

The German discount grocer said it has already opened 20 new stores this year, despite the ongoing restrictions caused by the pandemic.

As it continues its expansion, Lidl is looking for new sites including town centre, edge of centre and retail park locations, and is calling on developers and landlords to help it find sites to build new stores.

Lidl said new stores will include in-store bakeries, and will include solar panels to provide renewable energy for the site, as well as electric vehicle charging points.

All new stores will also become part of the retailer's food redistribution programme Feed It Back, which donates to the local community through food banks and partner charities.
