Work to update and modernise the Kings Walk shopping centre in Gloucester has begun and will see the shopping centre given a facelift as part of the transformation of Kings Quarter.

The revamp will see new lighting installed to brighten up the walkways and the atrium given an overhaul with the sails removed to let in natural light and a new bronze colour scheme introduced to highlight its architectural details.

The signs to the mall will be updated above the Eastgate, Clarence Street and King's Square entrances and new ceilings put in.

The work is part of the multi-million pound regeneration work that is being carried out by Gloucester City Council and its partners Reef Group that includes the improvements to Kings Square and the nearby Forum development.

The Forum includes apartments with cathedral views, the development of Grade A workspace, as well as state-of-the-art digital conference facilities and a new boutique hotel with rooftop bar. It was recently announced that the hotel will be taken on by IHG Hotels & Resorts who will bring the upscale hotel brand, Hotel Indigo to Gloucester.

Councillor Richard Cook, leader of Gloucester City Council, said: "Updating the Kings Walk shopping centre will help give a boost to the shops and businesses and bring the mall in line with the rest of the work that is taking place around it to modernise the city centre. This is just one part of the huge amount of regeneration that is taking place across the city to make Gloucester a city fit for the future."

Esther Croft, development director at Reef Group, said: "The work to improve Kings Walk is integral to the development of the area and part of our strategy to attract new tenants, to what will be a vibrant and modern shopping centre. We look forward to announcing some exciting new tenants soon."

Kings Walk shopping centre will be closed from 8.30pm to 6am every night throughout the improvement works due to complete at the end of the summer. Businesses will be open as usual.
