Just proud to be involved in the BBC Food and Farming Awards 2018

For a Gloucestershire food producer whose name was built on fresh salmon this was the one that got away.

Shortlisted in the BBC's Food and Farming Awards 2018 Chaxhill-based Severn and Wye Smokery was invited to City Hall Bristol for last night's (June 13) finals.

When the awards began back in 2000 the BBC team behind the popular Radio 4 show of the same name said they had one aim: "To honour those who have done most to promote the cause of good food."

For Severn and Wye Smokery, it was a thrill just to be involved and centre stage on national radio.

"Unfortunately we didn't win but we are extremely happy to be a finalist," said Greg Nicholson, culinary director at the Forest of Dean operation started by Richard (pictured) and Shirley Cook.

The team from the business joined others shortlisted for the awards, rubbing shoulders with celebrities including award-winning chef Mitch Tonks and Blur musician turned cheese-maker, and Gloucestershire resident, Alex James.

Severn and Wye Smokery was up for the retail award, judged by Gill Meller, chef, writer and River Cottage tutor, and award-winning writer Joanna Blythman.

The Chaxhill smokery, which started life in 1989 in an effort to promote salmon from the area, has evolved and grown and earlier this year walked away with the artisan category in the Delicious Magazine produce awards.

A new addition to the business, The Barn café and restaurant, has also helped draw attention and caught the BBC's eye.

"We only opened the restaurant in October following the three-year renovation, so to be nominated after seven months is great news," said Mr Nicholson.

The Barn houses a food hall, café, fish restaurant, gift shop, smokery and what the business describes as one of the country's finest fresh fish counters, known as the Fish Market.

Clients now include Selfridges, Harrods, Harvey Nichols, The Ritz, The Savoy, Gordon Ramsey and it supplies markets in the UK, Europe, US, Middle East and the Far East.
