Documents reveal Julian Dunkerton’s multi-million-pound plans

Details have been revealed of the major plans being developed by Julian Dunkerton for the rest of the Dowdeswell Park estate.

The entrepreneur and businessman, who most famously made his name and fortune with Superdry, has made no secret of his ambitions for the long-standing business park and land at Charlton Kings.

On Friday the publicity machine in place to promote the newly developed headquarters for Dunkertons Cider staged a launch party to put the organic drinks producer on the site on the map.

Now Gloucester and Cheltenham-based planning experts SF Planning has filed an application for planning permission for the rest of the business park - revealing a little more of the grand scheme.

"Extension and external alterations to office building including use of part of the building as a cafe and exercise space," is how the application form modestly sums up the development.

An accompanying letter outlines what is "a full planning application for external alterations and extension to the 'Dael Building' at Dowdeswell park".

"Planning permission is also sought to change the use of a small part of the building to a café and for part of the extended space to be used as an exercise studio," said the letter, signed by Liz Shield, SF Planning Limited.

The letter also goes on to explain the deliberate omission of the number of staff expected to be based at the site.

The new restaurant and cafe would amount to approximately 360 square metres of floor space, another 177 sq m assigned as 'assembly and leisure', and a 1,195 new internal office floorspace.

"I will have invested another £10 million-plus by the time I am finished," Mr Dunkerton told Punchline.

Revealing some of what might be afoot for the bigger of the undeveloped warehouses on the site he said: "We plan to develop a centre for organic and artisan food - from around the country. The very best we can find.

"It will be a unique experience. The only one of its kind in the country."

Talks with producers, he said, are already underway.

Work on the impressive cidery and offices was completed by the high-end building firm, Dowdeswell Estates, Mr Dunkerton uses to renovate his growing chain of The Lucky Onion boutique hotels and bars.

Groundworks were carried out by Gloucester-based EMG.

It is expected future developments would also use Dowdeswell Estates.
