Jobs at risk through proposed newspaper office closure
24th November 2017
More newspaper jobs are at risk in Gloucestershire with plans to close a weekly office.
Newsquest is proposing to shut the Cirencester office of the Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard in Dyer Street as part of a restructure which has put four jobs at risk.
The website Hold the Front Page has reported that three roles in Cirencester are placed at risk of redundancy - the paper's arts editor, an editorial assistant and a receptionist.
In addition, the company is reportedly planning to reduce the number of sports editors working at three sister titles - the Standard, the Gloucestershire Gazette and the Stroud News & Journal - from three to two.
The Standard's office would be closed at the end of December if the proposal went ahead.
Remaining staff would be faced with working from the offices of the News & Journal or Swindon Advertiser, with remote working also a possibility.
Consultations with affected staff are set to be completed by the end of November.
John Wilson, editor of the Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard, which was established in 1837, declined to comment.
The news follows a major shake-up of Gloucestershire's two daily newspapers - the Gloucester Citizen and the Gloucestershire Echo - which went weekly in October with the loss of five jobs.
Punchline says: This is another sad day for journalism as more lose their jobs and the local knowledge is removed from an area. Local and regional papers play a massive part in our democracy and it is imperative that there is a voice that champions the local community and keeps our civic leaders in check. We can all play our part by buying 'your' local paper.
