Inspirational art exhibition by injured soldiers comes to Gloucester

An inspirational exhibition of work by injured soldiers and veterans will be heading to Gloucester this month.

Art In The Aftermath' features paintings, drawings, photos, poetry and films in a special pop-up exhibition.

It is presented by Gloucestershire charity 'Style For Soldiers' which was set up by city-based menswear designer Emma Willis, to provide clothing for injured military personnel.

The exhibition will officially open on Tuesday, September 10 and runs until Christmas, at the former Co-op store, opposite WH Smith.

Several veterans' short films will be screened, including former Royal Engineer and triple amputee Matt Weston's short film 'For Love of Words' starring Style for Soldiers ambassador Charles Dance.

There will be poetry performances by the veterans who, together with some of the artists, will be at the exhibition over the three months to talk about their work.

'Art in the Aftermath' was created after Emma Willis met hundreds of injured personnel while visiting Headley Court Military Hospital.

After seeing their artwork, it spurred the idea of curating an exhibition, which not only highlights how creative arts helps injured personnel battling with PTSD and physical life changing injuries, but celebrates exceptional talent.

The free exhibition will show powerful images of Ms Willis' visits to the Military Hospital, as well as photographic portraits of injured soldiers dressed immaculately in a photo shoot by top fashion photographers Ben Weller and Boo George.

All the art works displayed can be purchased and prices range from books at £10, prints from £35 and paintings from £250-£400. All proceeds go directly to the artists.

Style for Soldiers was founded 10 years ago by Gloucester luxury shirt designer Emma Willis MBE from her headquarters in Bearland House, in response to the severe casualties returning from Afghanistan.

The charity also provides bespoke regimental walking sticks which have been sponsored by Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall.

The charity supports more than 750 injured service personnel with clothing for interviews, new jobs and important occasions and has enlisted the support of other companies including Russell and Bromley, Marks & Spencer and Burberry.

Emma Willis said: "We are proud of our heritage in Gloucester and we have been making the bespoke shirts as part of Style for Soldiers from here over the last ten years.

"From our previous exhibitions, it was so moving to see the thousands of people who were inspired by how much our servicemen and women give to our country.

"That then inspired me to bring the exhibition home to the centre of Gloucester.

"Thanks to Gloucester City Council, Reef Group and King's Walk, Gloucester shopping centre we were able to secure a unit for the pop-up exhibition and we can't wait to show people this exceptional work from such talented artists."

Leader of Gloucester City Council Paul James said: "This is a remarkable exhibition which really highlights not only the talent of these former soldiers but their strength and determination in the face of adversity.

"We are very proud to support it and it is fitting that it will be held in the centre of Gloucester - the home of Emma's charity Style for Soldiers.

"I'm looking forward to seeing the exhibition, along with many others and wish them every success."

The exhibition is open to the public Tuesday to Saturday 11am until 5pm and entry is free.
