By James Young | 16th March 2020
Work to improve two busy Cheltenham town centre car parks got underway this morning.
Parts of the St James' Street and Regent Arcade car parks will be cordoned off while the phased improvement works take place.
At St James' Street, new lighting is being installed with the work expected to take around six weeks to complete, the work will affect access to some of the spaces.
The work will see LED lights being installed, to provide more cost-efficient and environmentally friendly lighting to the car park.
The improvements will be carried out in a phased approach, each lasting two weeks, to cause as little disruption to the car park as possible.
Visitors will however see approximately half the car park cordoned off from use each week day.
The bring bank skips will be moved temporarily to an alternative location within the car park.
The entrance and exit points will remain unaffected so that access is maintained.
At the Regent Arcade, hand rails, protective rails, pillars and car park walls are being painted.
There will also be a slight reduction in the number of spaces while the work is carried out over the next month.
Cheltenham Borough Council's cabinet member for development and safety, councillor Andrew McKinlay said: "These improvements are an investment in our facilities. For St James' Street car park we have notified local businesses, the local school St John's and local residents.
"At Regent Arcade car park signage will be in place to inform visitors and we appreciate there will be a reduction in the number of spaces.
"We apologise for any inconvenience caused whilst this essential work is carried out however we hope that customers will see the benefits very soon.''
