Ignore the signs saying June finish, A40 Golden Valley roadworks are delayed

Phase three of the £1.8million roadworks on the A40 Golden Valley bypass start today - meaning the finish has been delayed by around two months.

Signs on main link road between Gloucester and Cheltenham are still displaying finish date of June 19 for the lengthy works, but don't be fooled by that being the actual date for completion.

Highways England have confirmed that phases one and two of the 'refurbishment' on the bridge has discovered more work was needed than first thought.

And now that means the work will be going on - and that pesky 50 mile per hour speed limit and average speed cameras will be in place - until early to mid August.

Currently, the eastbound carriageway on the bridge that crosses the M5 mortorway is closed, with traffic diverted via contraflow to the westbound carriageway, or via the slip road roundabouts.

That means only one of the westbound carriageways is open, with a similar lane diverted via the slip road roundabouts.

Phase three will see work carried out on the central reservations with lane two closed in both directions and the diversions being maintained on the slip roads.

The essential and extensive scheme will address a number of defects, prevent any further deterioration and ensure that the bridges remain in good condition for many years to come.

Once this phase is completed, finishing work will take place, under overnight closures and off-peak daytime lane closures, until early to mid-August.

Graham Wanless, South West Head of Scheme Delivery for Highways England, said: "We are making every effort to ensure that the impact on the local community is kept to an absolute minimum and as the scheme progresses, we are communicating any changes via roadside signage.

"We know that roadworks can be frustrating but by doing this work now we're able to prevent more disruptive work in the future and we'd like to thank motorists for their patience while this takes place."
