Hedge-fund manager branches out with Gloucester Rugby

Gloucester Rugby has a new face on the board with hedge-fund manager Jack Ingles joining its shareholders at Kingsholm.

A lifelong Gloucester Rugby fan, 31-year-old Mr Ingles graduated from Oxford University in 2014 and is a portfolio manager with London-based USA global asset firm Point72.

His purchase of 10% as a stake means that the former Goldman Sachs investment banking associate joins majority shareholder Martin St Quinton and fellow businessman Tim Griffiths in the club's boardroom. Both Mr Ingles and Mr Griffiths now hold 10%, with Mr St Quinton making up the remaining 80%.

Mr Ingles move also resonates with his boss at Point72: Steven A Cohen has owned Major League Baseball team the New York Mets since 2020.

Mr St Quinton said: "We are thrilled to have Jack join the board. His significant financial expertise, as well as his long-standing support of the club, makes him the ideal addition and we are immensely grateful for his commitment to the future of Gloucester Rugby.

"It is a testament to the club, to Alex Brown and the Director group, that we have attracted investment from someone of Jack's calibre. I'm confident the club is in the right hands and on an upward trajectory."

Mr Ingles added: "I am over the moon to be investing in the club. It's an exciting time for rugby - the quality of the product has never been better and thanks to its exceptional management, Gloucester Rugby is in a great place to grow with the game. I know first-hand how important Gloucester Rugby is to the fans and local community and I am excited to get stuck in and do what I can to help push the club forward."

Gloucester Rugby's latest annual, to June 30, 2023, showed that the company made a loss but performed well against the other nine Premiership clubs.

At Kingsholm's Board of Directors, Mr Ingles will sit alongside: Martin St Quinton (Chair and Owner), Tim Griffiths (minority shareholder), Alex Brown (Chief Executive Officer), Matt Mulcahy (Finance Director), Nicol McClelland (Marketing Director) and non-executive directors Andy Hunt and Simon Thorp.
