Pub refurb gets the go-ahead

A 'run-down' pub has been given planning permission for a much-needed refurbishment.
The Harry Cook Free House at 23 Montpellier Walk is owned by Mitchells & Butlers. It is a popular town centre pub, which said it 'may be the most sophisticated pub in Cheltenham'.

But its interior and exterior are both in need of an update. Permission has been granted by Cheltenham Borough Council for alteration to the bar, new floor finishes, fixed seating, drink shelves, new screen and toilet refurbishment. It also has permission for three new retractable awnings to the rear of the building, on Montpellier Street.
The design and access statement to accompany the planning application said: "The current condition is poor and refurbishment is crucial for the public house in maintaining a sustainable business model moving forward."

23 Montpellier Walk is a Grade II listed building. The plans are designed to enhance the heritage building.
The design and access statement said: "The company has sought, wherever possible, to respect the original layout of the building and to retain and enhance its original features. It therefore proposes to refurbish the public house by taking no character away from the heritage asset. Securing the future of the building as a business is crucial to securing the future of the building itself.
"The design has been developed to have minimal impact on the surrounding area whilst still providing the needed refurbishment to the run-down premises and meet the need operationally, therefore allowing this public house to continue to serve the community.
"The proposed awnings have been positioned and selected to have minimal impact on the heritage setting whilst taking into account the public users."
