Waste management site hit by fire

Flames from a waste management site could be seen from miles away last night (July 30).
Two compactors were on fire at Grundon Waste Management in Bishop's Cleeve.

Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue service (GFRS) was called out at 8:54pm, but people could already smell smoke from as far away as Swindon Village at 8:15pm.
A spokesperson for GFRS confirmed four fire engines were sent to the scene, one from Tewkesbury and three from Cheltenham, along with the water carrier.
Local people were advised to close their windows and doors, after a large plume of black smoke drifted across a wide area.
The spokesperson said: "Firefighters used four jets and two sets of breathing apparatus to put it out and the compactors were 100 per cent damaged by the fire. The cause is being investigated."
GFRS left the site at 1:30am today and confirmed it would be back today to carry out a reinspection.
GFRS initially wrote on X that the fire was located at the Wingmoor Farm Household Recycling Centre, but later issued an update that it was actually at Grundon Waste Management.
