PIES ON THE RISE: Greggs plans to open 17th Gloucestershire shop

Bakery giant Greggs continues its rise with plans to bring its 17th branch to the Gloucestershire area.

It has applied to take over part of the former Evans Cycles on the Kingsditch Trading Estate in Cheltenham.

The bicycle supply shop shut in 2023 and permission to subdivide the unit  into three was granted in May this year.

Greggs now wanted to sell its famous hot pies and pastries from the corner unit at the junction with Runnings Road.

It has asked Cheltenham Borough Council for permission to install louvres on the shopfront and put up its signs.

A statement by JMS Planning submitted on behalf of Greggs said: "The application site is located within the industrial estate, well removed from residential properties and not adjoining any residential boundaries. As such, it is considered that the proposed signage will have no adverse impact on residential amenity.

"The nature and character of the premises and the proposed advertisement is entirely in keeping with the character of the area and it is not considered to have any adverse impact on highway safety."

Cheltenham already has three Greggs, on the High Street, in Coronation Square and Gallagher Retail Park.

It also has five stores in Gloucester, three in Cirencester, two in the Forest of Dean, one in Stroud, one in Tewkesbury  and one in Moreton-on-Marsh- bringing the current total to 16.

It is due to open a fourth Cirencester shop in the former Mountain Warehouse unit on Cricklade Street after plans were approved in April 2025.

The company revealed in May it had plans to grind out 150 net openings this year  and was on a roll with 20 opened in 20 months so far in 2025.

The chain now has more locations than McDonalds, with 2,638 bakeries nationally, and wants to boost this to more than 3,000.
