Greggs continues to be on a roll

Greggs is set to open 150 new branches this year, after reporting a 23% rise in sales last year.

The bakery chain has branches across Gloucestershire and also has moved into business parks such as Eastern Avenue Trading Estate in Gloucester. The company said it was aiming to launch the new shops after opening a record 186 new stores in 2022, when it also closed 39 shops.

At the end of December, Greggs had 2,328 shops and the company said there was a clear opportunity for significantly more than 3,000 UK shops in time.

Total sales in 2022 were £1,513 million (2021: £1,230 million) and pre-tax profits were up 1.9% to £148.3 million.

Greggs is famous for its sausage rolls and the company said sales of pizza and chicken goujons were growing well.

It also extended opening hours for around 500 shops to 8pm or beyond in 2022.

Chief executive Roisin Currie said: "2022 has been a year of strong progress for Greggs, the result of committed efforts to deliver our strategic growth plan.

"The significant opportunities on which the plan is based will remain centre stage in the year ahead as we make Greggs more accessible to even more customers.

"Although consumer incomes remain under pressure, Greggs continues to offer exceptional value to people looking for great tasting, high-quality food and drink on-the-go.

"We have an exciting, ambitious plan for the years ahead and, by continuing to nurture what makes Greggs special, I believe we are extremely well-placed to realise the opportunity to become a significantly larger, multi-channel business."
