Government outlines reform to accelerate planning

Planning permission will be granted automatically in some cases under new reforms to be introduced by the Government in England.
Outlining the planned reforms in the Sunday Telegraph, Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick said land would be designated for growth, renewal or protection.
Developments on land designated for growth would receive automatic permission with areas set aside for renewal would be granted "permission in principle" to help speed up the process.
Mr Jenrick wrote: "We are cutting red tape, but not standards.
"I am completely overhauling the system so we can build more good quality, attractive and affordable homes faster - and more young families can finally have the key to their own home.
"Land designated for growth will empower development - new homes, hospitals, schools, shops and offices will be allowed automatically,"
While he did not specify the criteria for designating the land into the three sections, he said areas of outstanding natural beauty and the green belt would be protected with the intention to focus on quality and design.
Full details of the reforms are expected to be unveiled this week.
The existing planning system stems largely from the Town and Country Planning Act which dates to 1947.
