Plans for a new microbrewery, houses, bar and restaurant in the centre of Tewkesbury have been approved.
BPL Architecture Ltd on behalf of Corbally Group (Tewkesbury) Ltd applied to Tewkesbury Borough Council for permission to redevelop the brewery buildings site on Quay Street and Back of Avon - just 50m from the High Street.
Plans include demolition of all the buildings on site, apart from the Grade II listed brewery building on the corner and its change of use to a cafe, bar and restaurant with micro-brewery, eight new townhouses and one apartment, with access, car parking and landscaping.
The 1,277sq m site was most recently used by Healings Mill as offices, stores a canteen and workshops. It has been derelict for 18 years and the terrace of four industrial building on Back of Avon is no longer fit for purpose.
The development will include four new 3-bed townhouses on Back of Avon and four new 2-bed townhouses on Quay Street, with a 2-bed apartment over the site access. All of the homes will be sold on the open market.
In the Design & Access Statement submitted as part of the planning application, BPL Architecture said: "These buildings do not provide a suitable model for conversion and would have to be adapted considerably both internally and externally, and which in itself would involve major demolition work.
"Therefore, it is concluded that these buildings should be demolished leaving the important corner listed brewery building to stand on its own."
The corner brewery building footprint was seen as an ideal location for a restaurant adjacent to Mill Avon and the riverside walk, with a microbrewery in keeping with the building's original purpose.
