Gloucestershire wine is ‘best in the world’

A Gloucestershire-made sauvignon blanc wine has been named the best in the world in a blind taste test.
Woodchester Valley, based in Stonehouse, snapped up the 'Master' medal at the Global Sauvignon Blanc Masters awards in the £20 - £30 category, as reported by The Daily Mail. The award-winning wine retails for £21.95.
The family business, run by Fiona Shiner, her husband and daughter, is one of only a handful of British companies producing sauvignon blanc, which is traditionally grown in warmer climates.
Writing on Woodchester Valley's website, Fiona Shiner said: "It is true to say that a few eyebrows were raised when I first planted our sauvignon blanc vines in 2015 in the Cotswolds. It was a risky trial planting on a virgin site and in the South West of England, when the majority of vineyards were located in the South East."
Having planted 2,000 vines, the company harvested its first small crop in 2017 and produced a small quantity of wine, before the 2021 harvest produced the 'best sauvignon blanc in the world'.
