Gloucestershire teenagers killed in car crash named

Two teenagers who were killed in a car crash near Dursley, Gloucestershire, last week have been named as Jake Rugman, 17, and Matthew Millard, 18.

The two friends were in a red VW car which crashed on Tait's Hill, Stinchcombe, near Dursley last Thursday, October 13.

Inquests into their deaths were opened at Gloucestershire Coroner's Court on Tuesday this week and adjourned to a date to be fixed.

Jake and Matthew were both from Charfield, near Wotton under Edge, Gloucestershire.

They were both pronounced dead at the scene of last week's single vehicle accident, which happened at around 11pm. A woman in her 20s, who was also in the car, suffered injuries in the collision.

A GoFundMe page has been launched by their friends to create a memorial for the boys which has already raised almost £6,000.

A tribute on the page said: "Matt and Jake were two teenagers who lived in our small village of Charfield. Tragically on October 13, 2022, late at night they lost their precious lives in a car accident.

"Matt and Jake were kind and loved by all who knew them, they were the life of the party and spread joy wherever they went. They always put other people before themselves. As you can probably imagine this is a really tough time for everyone.

"Money raised from this go fund me will be put towards a memorial for Jake and Matt, somewhere their families and friends can visit to remember them. However much you give, be it little or small, is really appreciated by their family and friends. "

You can donate to the fundraiser here.

Matthew Millard had, until June 2022, been a pupil of Katherine Lady Berkeley School in Wotton under Edge.

The school acting headteacher Hannah Khan said everyone who knew Matthew had been "deeply affected by the terrible news." She said support was being offered to "anyone who is struggling".

Mathew's death comes just months after the school lost another pupil, Joe Parker, who died from an adverse reaction to medication.

A letter sent out by the school following Matthew's death said:

"Dear Parents and Carers,

"It is with much sadness that I am writing to inform you of the death of Matthew Millard, who left year 13 in June this year. Last night, he tragically lost his life in a car accident, which also claimed the life of another young man.

"Many staff and students are deeply affected by this terrible news, and we have been offering support to anyone who is struggling.

"Jane Daniel, one of our English teachers who is trained to offer bereavement counselling, has been supporting students and staff today. In addition, other pastoral staff are available to help in any way they can."

"Many of this year group have just started at university. With clusters of students at many universities across the UK, we hope that they will come together to support each other at this very difficult time.

"As a year group, they came together with the staff to mourn the loss of Joe Parker just a few months ago. We are always available should any of them wish to contact us at school.

"We will continue to offer support to students and staff over the coming days and weeks. For now, our thoughts are very much with Matt's family."

Gloucestershire Police have issued an appeal for witnesses of the collision.

Police are also keen to hear from motorists who have dashcams and were in the area after 11pm on October 13. Anyone with information can contact police quoting the reference number.

Information can be provided to Gloucestershire Police through their website, quoting incident 533 of October 13.
