Unsung heroes who make a difference to their communities have been honoured by the Queen.

Fifteen people from around Gloucestershire and South Gloucestershire have received awards in the Birthday Honours List for their services in a range of areas, including education, policing and voluntary work.

They are:

Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE)

• Timothy Hutchinson, of Newland, formerly chief executive of Hachette UK, for services to publishing and literature;
• Professor John Latham, of Chipping Camden, who is vice-chancellor of Coventry University, for services to higher education.

Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE)

• Gavin Thomas, of Gloucestershire, formerly Chief Superintendent of Gloucestershire Constabulary and president of the Police Superintendents' Association, for services to policing.

Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE)

• Paul Appleby, of Winterbourne, South Gloucestershire, for services to the creative industries in Bristol and Bath;

• Julie Dyer, of Stonehouse, for services to young people with special educational needs;
• Peter Floyd, of Old Down, South Gloucestershire, for services to the community in Bristol;
• Jane Horne, of Newent, who was a councillor for Forest of Dean District Council, for voluntary and charitable services to the community in the Forest of Dean;
• Roger Maggs, of Tetbury, who is chairman of the Port Talbot Waterfront Enterprise Zone, for services to the economy in Wales;
• Peter Pepys-Goodchild, of Cheltenham, for public and political service;
• Lynn Tyler, of Yate, South Gloucestershire, who is the executive assistant to Director, Air Support, Defence Equipment and Support, Ministry of Defence, for services to defence;
• Frances Watson, of Painswick, for services to people with learning disabilities in Gloucestershire;
• Dr Peter Whitehead, of Priors Norton, for services to equestrian sport science and medicine.

Medallist of the Order of the British Empire (BEM)

• Roger Beard, of Newent, for services to the community in Newent;
• Brendan McInerney, of Longford, for services to volunteering, the public sector and the community in Gloucestershire;
• Simon Paul, of Gloucestershire, for services to the community in Lechlade on Thames.

Edward Gillespie, Lord-Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, said: "Many congratulations to everyone honoured in the Queen's Birthday Honours List 2019. They thoroughly deserve this recognition for the positive contributions they make to our communities."
