Gloucestershire Energy from Waste Facility open day

The Gloucestershire Energy from Waste Facility will hold an open day next month.

The facility, close to Junction 12 of the M5, will hold its open day on Saturday March 18.

The open day will give visitors the chance to learn about the energy from waste process and to see the on-site plant and equipment.

The three one-hour sessions, intended for small groups such as families, couples and friends, will each host a maximum of 15 people and will take place at 10am, 11:30am, and 1pm.

Visitors are invited on a tour of the site to view and understand the different elements of the energy from waste process, including the waste cranes, the combustion grate and the stack.

Dan Pearson, general manager, said: "With exceptional demand for our regular tours, we're excited to welcome more residents across our county for another unmissable day of learning. It's important that we help educate the local community about the benefits of energy from waste and sustainable waste management and we're hopeful that these events are helping people to feel more involved with what we do."

The Gloucestershire Energy from Waste Facility celebrated its three-year anniversary in October. In three years, it has treated 564,896 tonnes of waste and exported 386,890 MWh of electricity to the National Grid. The facility has also recovered 127,297 tonnes of materials for recycling, which includes incinerator bottom ash (IBA), the collective name for ash and metals.

As well as treating up to 190,000 tonnes of household residual waste from Gloucestershire's homes and Household Recycling Centres, and waste of a similar composition from commercial businesses every year, the facility is also used to help educate the local community about the energy from waste process.

Regular visits, which reopened to the general public in May 2022, have proven so popular that the facility is fully booked until early 2024.
