Gloucestershire council to consider £5m transport funding bid

A bid for £5million of funding for a transport scheme near Tewkesbury will be among a range of measures which will be put to Gloucestershire County Council's cabinet for approval next week.

The further investment is for the M5 Junction 9 and A46 Transport Scheme, which would re-route part of the A46 which passes through Ashchurch

If cabinet approval is given, the plan is to submit an Outline Business Case to the Department for Transport next spring ahead of consultations over route options.

Councillor Nigel Moor, cabinet member for environment and planning said: "These are very significant proposals, both for Gloucestershire and also at a national level, with the potential to bring £300million of investment into our county.

"The scheme will boost the local economy, improve safety and enhance the quality of life for many residents living near the A46 in Ashchurch by reducing congestion and improving air quality.

"I will be recommending to cabinet that we invest further in developing these ambitious proposals so we will be able to submit a funding bid to government."

Next Wednesday's cabinet meeting is also likely to agree £6.7million additional funding for schools.

Councillor Patrick Molyneux, cabinet member responsible for education, commented: "Ongoing investment in our young people is so important and something we are absolutely committed to.

"We have already delivered a range of schemes to expand the schools and improve the facilities.

"The funding cabinet is set to approve will ensure even more pupils benefit in the future."

The cabinet will also be presented with a report which will show a projected underspend of around £1.79million in 2020-21 which will be reallocated to other projects.

These include £1million to create a Gloucestershire Restart Fund for the post-pandemic recovery and £220,000 to fund 500 electric vehicle charing points.

And the cabinet will be asked to approve an Infrastructure Recovery Strategy to generate funds for investment from developments benefiting from M5 Junction 10 improvements.
