Gloucestershire charity marks 25 years of supporting bereaved children

Gloucestershire's acclaimed bereavement charity Winston's Wish is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

To mark the milestone, the charity has released a video on its website of 25 children, young people and adults telling their Winston's Wish stories and what the charity has meant to them.

Launched in 1992 to meet the needs of bereaved children and their families in the county, the charity was the first of its kind in the UK and reaches thousands of children every year through its services.

Winston's Wish was established by Julie Stokes, OBE, a clinical psychologist, after she visited the US and Canada on a Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship and was inspired by the services she saw there.

More than 100 children are bereaved of a parent every day in the UK and the charity receives more than 5,000 calls to its helpline every year, as well as supporting around 1,000 children face-to-face.

It is now a national charity, with regional hubs in Gloucestershire, the south east and north west of England.

Through its national helpline and ASK email service, it is able to support children and families across the whole of the UK.
