Firm puts energy into food processing expansion

Plans to expand the little-talked about food side of a well-known Gloucestershire energy firm are on the menu.

Ecotricity, which markets itself as one of the nation's leading green energy firm's, is looking to add to its food preparation facilities at a Stroud business park.

Q Park at Bath Road, Inchbrook, is the site of the proposed expansion which is currently being considered by Stroud District Council's planning officers.

Ecotricity, which is headquartered in Stroud and is the town's biggest private employer, already has a food processing operation on the business park which is also home to another business owned and run by the energy firm.

"The proposed temporary modular building would be located within the existing premises of Q Park, an established wind turbine manufacturing business (Britwind) owned and operated by Ecotricity Group," said Ecotricity, in its application to the local authority.

"The existing premises comprise a range of buildings, vehicle parking and storage facilities for the manufacturing and export of meteorological masts and small wind turbines."

The facility would be housed in a "temporary modular building" for a period of 24 months and "all supporting equipment, can be accommodated within a total maximum area of 13.6m length x 10m wide".

The site is located within the Stroud Industrial Heritage Conservation Area.

According to a letter from Hoare Lee, the Bristol-based engineering consultancy, which accompanied the application "the noise from the proposed plant would represent low impact".

"Vehicle movements will largely be staff vehicles, and it is expected that one or two heavy goods vehicle movements to site could be made for product delivery/collection during day-time periods," added the report.

A decision is yet to be made on the application. Punchline-Gloucester.com contacted Ecotricity to ask for more detail prior to publication and is awaiting a reply.
