Gloucestershire Airport development takes important step forward

A milestone has been reached in the £15million development of Gloucestershire Airport.

A new vehicular route to the CGX Connect site has been completed, meaning work on the project can now forge ahead.

The new business park will contain 30,000 sqm of flexible floor space for businesses operating in the logistics and industry sectors and create up to 1,500 jobs.

It will sit on land between Anson and Meteor business parks and replace part of the north-south runway which will be closed to make way for the new development.

Karen Taylor, managing director of Gloucestershire Airport, described the completion of the access road as a "significant" step forward.

She added: "These are exciting times for Gloucestershire Airport and CGX Connect.

"Now that there's vehicular access to the site, we expect things to move quickly. Before now no one could access the site to build.

"This access road will unlock future development and brings us one step closer to realising a landmark development with the potential to unlock so much growth for the region."

Gloucestershire-based Vitruvius Management Services is principal contractor on the project and instructed Worcester-based Montel Civil Engineering to deliver the work.

It included building a new entrance into the development, the diversion and protection of existing and new services, and the widening of access to the B4063 to allow a dedicated right turn for those coming from the west. It also carried out work to clear the site, constructed pedestrian refuges and put up new streetlights, signage and road markings.

Simon Turbutt, managing director of Montel Civil Engineering, said: "This was an exciting opportunity to work with both Vitruvius and Gloucestershire Airport and a great example of how infrastructure improvements can be an enabler and catalyst for significant economic growth within the region."

The infrastructure work was supported by £1.855million of Growth Deal funding from GFirst LEP.

David Owen, chief executive of GFirst LEP, said it was proud to back such an ambitious project. He added: "It's an exciting time for Gloucestershire as this project nears fruition."

Plans for the development were approved by Tewkesbury Borough Council in February 2021.

They were amended after opposition from some businesses which operate out of the airport due to the potential loss of an area used for helicopter training and the closure of one of the cross-wind runways.

Work to upgrade the airport's runways is also being carried out by engineering and construction company VolkerFitzpatrick and due to be completed this summer.

The crossway runway has been resurfaced and the main runway is now being resurfaced. There will be new runway lighting and upgrades to signage and drainage, as well as the installation of below ground infrastructure in readiness for a new radar system.

When work is complete, the airport's north/south runway will close permanently to make way for CGX Connect.

Cheltenham Borough Council and Gloucester City Council, the airport's joint shareholders, have said in total up to £15million of work will be carried out at the airport.

Ms Taylor said: "CGX Connect, along with ongoing work to upgrade the airport's runways, will elevate the quality and status of the airport as a 'gateway for growth' for the many significant developments being brought forward across the region."

Traffic management will remain on the B4063 until the end of May and the footpath closest to the airport will remain closed.
