Dismay at eviction ban extension - landlords 'run businesses too'

An extension to the ban on commercial tenant evictions would be a huge disappointment and overlooks the fact that landlords 'run businesses too', a Gloucester surveyor says.
Kurt Wyman, Director of Kurt Wyman Surveyors, told Punchline Gloucester the scheme has been abused and has led to some tenants not paying their rent.
The moratorium on evictions was introduced in April last year to help struggling businesses through the Covid pandemic.
The scheme has already been extended twice and was due to stop at the end of June. But now, according to sources quoted by Sky News, the Treasury is planning to extend it for 'at least the rest of the year'.
Kurt Wyman said: "It is extremely disappointing the Government appear to be extending the ban on commercial evictions.
"The vast majority of landlords want tenants to succeed and thrive and eviction is only generally used as a last resort after other options have failed.
"The eviction moratorium has been abused and some tenants have unfortunately seen it as excuse not to pay the rent. Landlords run businesses too and also have bills to pay."
The news follows the Government's decision to delay the easing of lockdown restrictions by four weeks.
Hospitality and retail businesses have been particularly badly affected by the lockdowns and have called for the extension of the moratorium as they face lower income and rising debt.
Wyman added: "From a tenant's perspective it is always sensible to keep a dialogue with your landlord, keep them updated and agree a payment plan rather than just stop paying the rent."
