Gloucester shoe shop to close after 60 years

One of the longest-established independent shoe shops in Gloucester is shutting down

A G Meek first opened a shop in Westgate Street in 1965 in a Georgian-fronted Tudor building.

The store, which has five staff, relocated to Eastgate Street in October 2021 but it has now announced it will close its doors for good in April and it is now running a closing down sale

A shop assistant, who asked not to be named, told Punchline: "We are absolutely gutted the shop is closing but the sad truth is we don't get the footfall anymore on Eastgate Street. The customers have always been wonderful."

A G Meek, which replaced the old Accessorize shop on Eastgate Street, stocked top brands such as Kickers, Skechers and Timberland, as well as Rieker, Tamaris, Marco Tozzi, Hotter and Van Dal.

A G Meek was founded in Cardiff in 1912 by Albert George Meek, with a second shop opening in the city in the early 1920s and a third in Newport a few years later. It is understood the company's Welsh stores will remain open.

It was AG's two sons who made it famous in the 1950s for selling 'Meek's Sets' - the glamorous 1950s essential of matching shoes, bag and gloves. As one of the first adverts on ITV, their advert and jingle: 'The matching is unique at AG Meek' is still sung back to them.

Punchline-Gloucester.com editor Mark Owen said: "The shoe market is obviously difficult at the moment. Clarks closed down their shop in Eastgate Street last year - soon to be replaced by Howdens Insurance, and Shoe Zone this week reported a fall in sales and profits.

"I think fashions have changed and with more people working from home, people are less inclined to buy expensive office shoes."
