A lucky Gloucester resident has hit the jackpot after winning £25,000 in the council's charity lottery.

The cash prize, which was won by a resident who wishes to remain anonymous, is the highest amount ever paid out by the weekly lottery run by Gloucester City Council.

Since the win was announced a second lucky player has scooped a £2,000 prize.

The lottery has been running for six years and supports local charities and good causes such as South Western Ambulance Charity, the Hollie Gazzard Trust and Gloucester Foodbank.

Players buy a weekly ticket for £1 from which 50p goes to the cause they nominate, and 10p goes into a pot that local groups can bid for with ideas that bring the community together.

The lottery is drawn every Saturday night and winners whose numbers come up can receive a range of prizes from extra tickets up to the £25,000 jackpot.

The winner of the very first £25,000 prize, issued a statement saying that they were pleased to support their chosen charity of Katkinz, a cat rescue centre and that "they do an amazing job rehoming cats and always need donations to keep them operating".

They added: "I would definitely recommend the lottery to friends and family and hopefully they will have the same luck. 

"We booked a family holiday a few months back and are meeting up with family from other countries who we haven't seen for many years. This will pay for the holiday."

Councillor Raymond Padilla, cabinet member for communities and neighbourhoods at Gloucester City Council, said: "I'd like to congratulate the lucky winners and hope that they make the most of their fantastic prize.

"I hope this will encourage more people to play the lottery which is a win-win for Gloucester, not only supporting some hard working charities but also benefiting the community too."
