The underpass in Gloucester which connects the train station to Great Western Road will be closed for nine months while refurbishment works take place.
Starting in January 2023, Great Western Railway will be undertaking work to make the walkway step free.
They will also be installing better lighting and widening the northern entrance to remove the blind corner.
A spokesperson for GWR said the works are part of a wider project at the station being delivered in partnership with Network Rail, Gloucester City Council, GFirst LEP and Gloucestershire County Council.

They added: "Also included in this phase will be station forecourt improvements for bus and pedestrian access.
"Network Rail will also be working on the track trays in the roof of the subway so that it can be fully decorated to make it brighter, lighter and more pleasant to use.
"Work on the subway will make a significant improvement for users. Unfortunately, it is not possible to keep it open during work to it, and this will mean a five-minute alternative walking route around the station."
