Gloucester man launches city's first electric and solar powered boat hire service

24-year-old Gloucester Docks resident Jack Merrett has launched the city's first all-electric boat hire business, opposite the National Waterways Museum.
His eight-seater boats hope to give people of all ages the opportunity to experience the industrial heritage of the city from a new perspective and unwind in the beautiful countryside further along the historic canal.
Mr Merrett said preserving the environment is at the heart of his mission. The boats themselves are fully recyclable and when not on hire can be found helping to keep the canal clean.
Charged primarily by solar panels, this all-electric fleet is clean and comfortable. No noise or smells will interrupt conversation or the sounds of nature.
Boaters can also purchase delicious picnics provided by Gloucester caterer Naked Tartufi.
No experience is required, and the boats are easy to control - even children can take the helm. The boats are available seven days a week and prices start from just £30.
Jack Merrett, founder of Gloucester Boat Hire, said: "As a resident of Gloucester, I'm passionate about giving as many people as possible the chance to experience our historic waterways.
"There is so much to see on what was once the world's largest canal, and gliding around on one of our boats is the perfect way to relax and enjoy it."
"I'm proud our boats are fully electric and use solar as their primary means of charging."
