A 32 year old Gloucester man accused of raping an elderly woman after breaking into her home in the city last week was remanded in custody on Monday (November 15) pending a crown court appearance next month.
Brady Hickman, of Philip Street, Gloucester, appeared at Cheltenham Magistrates Court via video link wearing a grey top having been arrested in Stroud on Sunday morning (November 14).
He was told he is charged with rape on November 11, and two offences of sexual assault by penetration on the same occasion. He indicated that he was guilty of the charges but he did not formally enter any pleas.
The court heard that the 71-year-old woman, who is classed as vulnerable with mobility issues, activated her Lifeline personal alarm to report she had been raped by an intruder.
Jeremy Oliver, prosecuting, said: "She had taken a sleeping tablet and she woke up to find a man standing in front of her, naked. He told her what he was intending to do. She told him she wouldn't struggle if he didn't hurt her. Mr Hickman allegedly had sex with her and left DNA evidence behind."
Clare Buckley, defending, said that Hickman has mental health issues.
District Judge Nicholas Wattam said that the rape charge can only be dealt with at Gloucester Crown Court, and he committed the case there for a first hearing on December 17, 2021.
The judge remanded Hickman in custody until that date.
