Buried for years - literally in some cases - the history of the county's capital city is due to be celebrated from tomorrow (September 1) by a treasure trove of star names.
The now annual Gloucester History Festival will kick off with Gloucester Day which will see parades through the city centre to showcasing a little of its recent and distant past.
For the next two weeks there will be heritage open days, living history talks, gatherings at the historic Blackfriars priory featuring some star names all raising the profile of Gloucester and its incredibly rich history.
"The Blackfriars Talks include appearances from Michael Wood, Lucy Worsley, Janina Ramirez, Charles Spencer, Terry Waite, Kate Adie, Harriet Harman and Jenni Murray amongst many others," said a spokesman for the event, which has been championed by city MP Richard Graham.
Tomorrow there will be a display of treasure found by local metal detectorists, an invisible history trail, a model funfair exhibition, mock Mayor of Barton parade, civil war re-enactment and thanksgiving service at Brunswick Baptist Church.
On Sunday prepare yourself for the Aethelflaed Anglo Saxon Exhibition, an exhibition exploring the story of Joan Cook (founder of the first free school of grammar), an open day at Gloucestershire Heritage Hub and an open day at the newly restored Llanthony Secunda Priory beside the canal.
All of which are free.
Paid-for events begin from tomorrow too (Saturday), including a fun talk by historian and author Janina Ramirez - Riddle of The Runes Family Event.
