Council U-turn on business parking scheme

Businesses in the centre of Gloucester and Cheltenham angered by new parking restrictions will be celebrating after the county council announced a U-turn on its policy.

Anger in the business community began to rise after letters were sent out telling them their annual paid-for permits - which many had just paid for - could no longer be used to park all day.

Instead those who had just paid the £250 fee for the badges, which they were at liberty to switch between vehicles when needed, would only be able to park for a maximum of four hours.

Angry at not being able to get through to the council many turned to Punchline to pressure the council clarifying just what was going on. There was even talk of legal action against the council for breach of contract.

But after an emergency meeting this afternoon (October 24) the council has decided to take on board the many voices vociferously against the proposed changes.

David Norman, cabinet member responsible for parking said: "I want to thank businesses for the feedback they've given us on the introduction of digital parking permits.

"I have listened carefully to what they have said - and we will be changing the scheme to make sure there is no time limit on business parking permits. The council will be writing to all affected businesses next week to explain the change."

A letter is expected to go out businesses shortly to clarify the changes.
