VIDEO: Gloucester shop gets £90,000 makeover

A beloved Gloucester corner shop is thriving after undergoing a £90,000 makeover.

Owner Francis Ratnasingam has transformed the former 2000 News store at the junction of Calton Road and Ladysmith Road into a Premier.

The former taxi driver, who served in the French army as a young man, first took a punt on retail three years ago when he bought the shop.

He and wife Suba, daughter Anu and son Adrian have worked hard to make it a success and hope customers will enjoy the updated look.

News signs have been installed featuring the brand's distinctive yellow and aubergine logo and the inside has been kitted out with new fridges and equipment.

There are clearer signs showing where products such as wine, tobacco, frozen food, dairy, office supplies, bakery items and newspapers can be found.

Francis said he was happy with how the investment had turned out.

"When I took over I spent so much money refitting everything," he said. "Now it's all properly done I'm very happy.

"The customers are happy and it's been good for business and meant more profit.

"And my wife is happy."

Premier, a symbol brand, was founded in 1994 and bought by Tesco in 2018.

It has more than 4,000 stores across the UK run by retailers at a percentage every month and stocking branded and own brand products, such as Euro Shopper and Happy Shopper.
