Gloucester city centre car park demolition underway, but nothing will change for a week

Work has begun on the demolition of Gloucester's Bruton Way car park - although you won't notice much has changed for at least a week.

Crews from Wye Valley Demolition started work on the building known as Bentinck House this morning, preparing for it to be levelled.

According to documents lodged with Gloucester City Council, a specified timeline for the work has been set.

Week one of the demolition work, which starts today will see work done to set the site up for the demolition to start.

This will include identifying any hazardous materials in the buildings and installing protective fencing and netting around the site to protect nearby buildings, trees and roads.

A 'soft strip' of the internal fittings will run alongside that work with demolition proper beginning at the start of week two.

That will involve 'robotic plant' stripping away at sections of the buildings until it has been completely demolished.

The timeline suggests that the work will take 13 weeks to be completed, after which the site will be left ready for development.

By that time, Gloucester City Council's planning committee should have ruled on whether to permit the proposed masterplan for the redevelopment of the so-called King's Quarter.

King's Quarter is the next landmark redevelopment of the city that will see homes, offices, bars, cafes and restaurants built around a new thoroughfare linking the transport hub.
