Gloucester cannabis producers told in court: 'Sorry, there isn't enough time for your trial'

A lack of available court time has meant that an eight-day trial due to start at Gloucester Crown Court yesterday has had to be delayed for at least six months.

Yusaf Rahman, 31, of Weston Road, Gloucester, and Timothy West, 52, of St John's Avenue, Churchdown, have denied producing cannabis, a class B drug, on January 16, 2018.

Both men were due to be tried this week, but advocates realised yesterday that the allocated timetable was not long enough. They asked for a new date and the Recorder of Gloucester, Judge Ian Lawrie QC, lamented that the trial would now have to wait till next Spring.

"The courts are under massive pressure due to rationalisation within the Service," he said. "There is no wriggle room here or anywhere else and the earliest date available for a trial is March 23, 2020.

"I am sorry we couldn't arrange for an earlier date."

Both men were released on unconditional bail until the new trial date.
