Get your skates on! Ice rink returns to Cheltenham

A grand opening of the ice rink in Imperial Gardens was hosted by the Mayor of Cheltenham, Cllr Paul Baker.

This much-loved attraction promises magical skating experiences daily from today (Friday, November 29) to Sunday, January 5 (excluding Christmas Day).

Cheltenham Borough Council has made this year's ice rink possible with support from sponsors, including Hazlewoods, Optimising IT, Webbs Cheltenham, and headline sponsor, Lidl GB. Set within a beautifully decorated indoor space, the real ice rink ensures visitors can enjoy all the fun of skating without the uncertainty of winter weather.

Organised by the Visit Cheltenham team, the ice rink continues to be a major draw for visitors. Last year, the rink attracted over 30,000 people who spent an estimated £1.6 million in the local area.

To further enhance the event's sustainability, the team will again implement the innovative battery-powered solution that reduced carbon dioxide equivalent fuel emissions by 98.7% in 2023. This eco-friendly approach not only helps reduce the environmental impact but also minimises noise disruption for nearby residents and businesses.

Cllr Martin Horwood, cabinet member for Cheltenham Borough Council, said: "We're thrilled to bring the Cheltenham Ice Rink back to Imperial Gardens. It's already a much-loved attraction for locals and visitors alike and it really benefits the town's businesses during this crucial time of year.

"I want to thank our sponsors, especially Lidl GB, whose support will make this year our best yet. We can't wait to see families, friends, and skaters of all ages create unforgettable memories."

Graham Clark, regional director at Lidl GB, said: "As a proud member of the local community, we are delighted to be partnering with Cheltenham Ice Rink this season.

"Alongside the ice skating, visitors can sample some delicious festive favourites, win a variety of prizes including £10 off their shop and, in the spirit of giving, we will also have our toy banks for anyone who wishes to donate to the local charities."

The Cheltenham Ice Rink is designed to be accessible and fun for everyone, from three years old to seasoned skaters. New for this year are dedicated sessions, including:

  • Grown-up glides for adult skaters.
  • Student nights perfect for making winter memories with friends.
  • Little gliders sessions tailored for preschoolers.
  • Ice Princess parties for a touch of magic on the ice.
  • DJ night for a guaranteed party atmosphere on the rink.

Back by popular demand are relaxed glides for SEND skaters, family passes starting at just £38, concession rates, and season passes for skating enthusiasts.

Even non-skaters can join in the festive spirit! Spectators are welcome to enjoy free entry to the rink area, complete with hot food, drinks, and a cozy atmosphere surrounded by Christmas trees and sparkling lights.

Tickets are available now via the Visit Cheltenham website.
