GE Aviation sales brought down to earth

GE Aviation has seen revenue almost halved as the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the aviation industry continues to be felt.

The American manufacturer, which employs around 1,800 people in Bishop's Cleeve designing and manufacturing electronic and mechanical systems for commercial, business and military aircraft, announced in May it was cutting up to 13,000 jobs across its 52,000-strong global workforce.

That followed a 40 per cent drop in profits in the first quarter of 2020 which has continued as the pandemic's effect on the industry rumbles on.

The firm recorded a profit of $1billion in the first quarter - which ended just after the outbreak grounded flights around the world - but that turned into a $680million loss over the following three months.

That compares to a $1.4billion profit over the same three-month period in 2019.

Revenue sank by 44 per cent year on year to $4.4billion as services revenue fell by about half and equipment sales were down 33 per cent.

Its leasing arm GECAS has seen widespread requests from airlines for deferrals on aircraft deliveries.

GE Aviation at eye of Tempest with team effort

Last month Punchline reported that GE's Bishop's Cleeve facility would work on open architecture and infrastructure for electrical power and avionics systems as part of the Team Tempest project.

Team Tempest is a collaboration between BAE Systems, Leonardo UK, MBDA UK, Rolls-Royce and the Ministry of Defence to develop the technologies at pace and in an affordable manner.
