'Friendliest bar in the city' is crowned as CAMRA's best pub in Gloucester

Just over two years after opening, Gloucester's 'friendliest little bar' can now claim to be the best pub in the city.

Angie's Bar, in Bull Lane, Gloucester, was named after the late wife of licensee Fred Fisher, who tragically died before their business was launched.

The tiny pub prides itself on providing fine quality cask ales, and has now been recognised by CAMRA as the best pub in Gloucester.

Licensee Fred Fisher speaks fondly of what he calls 'the village of Gloucester' and is a familiar face, having worked around many pubs in the city over the last twenty years.

Fred and Angie had planned to open a bar in Greece but changed their minds and set their hearts on revitalising the bar which they had seen open and close many times over the years.

Angie, a musician, was also a very good decorator, says Fred, and the pair set to work renovating the premises over a six-week period in Autumn 2016.

"The major tragedy, just before we opened, was as Angie finished the decorating downstairs," said Fred.

"We went round the corner to The Fountain for a drink, and Angie had a major brain haemorrhage and within ten seconds was gone.

"She wasn't here for the opening - but she is still here with me.

Fred says the plan was always to call it Angie's Bar to avoid an argument between him and his business partner Simon Cripps over whether it should be called 'Fred's Bar or Simon's Bar'.

Following the opening in November 2016 Fred said they have "built up a wonderful customer base."

He added: "We have a permanently changing two different ales on the hand pulls.

"Some of the secret of our success is that we have aimed always at the quality of the ales. Do it at the right price and do quality products.

"We have a bit of live music once or twice a month.

"We are the smallest bar in Gloucester, but we have had a band of eight members!

"The smallest and friendliest bar in Gloucester, not our words, but what was quoted to us after we opened.

"A lot of hard graft has built up to this year, our Ale has been 'cask marqued'.

"We also received an award through Gloucester Best Bar None, which promotes standards in bars, and best small local pub in Gloucester.

"And to top it all a couple of weeks ago we won the CAMRA Gloucester pub of the year award.

"I feel very proud to have achieved that. It is on the back of a lot of work from the family of the bar.

"It is also about the community of the village, the punters that come in. t is what a pub should be about."
