Lucky Onion founders re-emerge to open new hotel

The couple who set up what is now widely referred to as Julian Dunkerton's Lucky Onion hotel group are on the verge of opening a new hotel.

Okay, there are some caveats with the above - for a start, the hotel is not new, but an historic 17th Century river-side hunting lodge.

Fans of the still-growing Lucky Onion brand, now synonymous with the former owner and founder of Superdry, Mr Dunkerton, were left wondering what had become of Sam and Georgie Pearman.

After establishing the chain over a five-year period - which now includes the likes of Cheltenham's No 131 and No 38 The Park - the high-profile couple abruptly departed the group in September 2017 leaving all who had followed their rise wondering.

Although it was understood at the time they stayed on as shareholders.

There was talk of "another project" but then nothing.

Under their stewardship The Lucky Onion group were nominated and has won industry awards, including finalist at the Mr and Mrs Smith Hotel Awards 2015 & 2016 and the GQ Magazine's Food and Drink Awards in 2017 and Best of British at the Tatler Restaurant Awards in 2016.

Mr Pearman, a chef who trained at Langan's Brasserie in London's Mayfair, and a former Gloucester Rugby player, and Mrs Pearman, a former lawyer, have now re-emerged.

The couple have been working for six months with Tom Naylor-Leyland, owner of The Talbot in Malton, Yorkshire, to create what will be called Country Creatures UK.

Fans of The Lucky Onion may recognise some of the trademark attention to detail if they check out various social media posts showing what promises to be an exciting new era for the business.

Well-known chef James Martin oversaw the hotel from 2012 to 2015.

But now it is the turn of the Pearman's to sprinkle some of their magic on the 26-room operation.

According to reports the first phase of their plans involves a new bar and restaurant. Head chef Robert Brittain is working with Mr Pearman to create the menus.

According to The Talbot's website the hotel "is undergoing refurbishment and will be closed from 14th January. Re-opening 4th February".
