Household recycling centre to close next month for £165k improvements

Gloucestershire County Council will temporarily close Fosse Cross Household Recycling Centre for essential works.

The site based near Cirencester will be closed from 8 November 2021 and is expected to reopen in early December 2021 (subject to weather conditions).

The essential works will strengthen the surfaces at the site and crucial drainage works will prevent the lower areas of the site from flooding. Historically flooding at the site has often meant parts of the site are unavailable and this work will ensure this doesn't happen in the future.

The works represent an important investment in the site costing £165,000. The county council postponed works during the pandemic and will be carrying out some elements of the improvements whilst the site remains open. This has helped cut down on the amount of time the site will need to be closed. Late autumn/winter has also been chosen as the quietest time for the site with the least demand.

In preparation for the closure, some materials won't be accepted at Fosse Cross from 18 October. Residents disposing of rubble, plasterboard, fridges, large appliances, asbestos and tyres will need to book a visit to any of the other five sites available for Gloucestershire residents, including Shipston Recycling Centre in Warwickshire.

Cllr David Gray, cabinet member responsible for waste and recycling, said, "We appreciate that any closure of the Fosse Cross site, no matter how short, is an inconvenience to our customers in the Cotswolds, and for that we apologise. We will do everything we can to keep the closure to the absolute minimum, but to secure customer safety and to ensure the site remains fit for purpose we do need to close for this short time whilst we invest in much needed site improvements.

"To help residents over the closure period we have made the next closest recycling centre available seven days a week, instead of six, for the duration of the closure of Fosse Cross.

"We know our residents are keen recyclers and we thank them for their ongoing support to promote a Greener Gloucestershire. We look forward to welcoming residents back to our improved site as soon as possible."

This closure does not affect district council household kerbside collections in the any part of Gloucestershire.
