Flood warnings in place and main Gloucestershire roads closed following Storm Dennis deluge

Flooding is causing a number of road closures across Gloucestershire as the true extent of Storm Dennis is hitting the county.

Gloucestershire Police, Gloucestershire's Fire Service and the County Council's road teams have all been taking to social media to report of roads closing due to being overrun with water.

Current information from the government's flood warning information service points to eight severe flood warnings - five of which are on the River Severn north of Gloucestershire.

A severe flood warning - means there is danger to life and means flooding is currently at its worst.

There are 168 flood warnings where further flooding is expected - and immediate action is required.

At least six of those warnings are in place for stretches of the river in Gloucestershire, with further warnings on the River Avon near Tewkesbury and the River Wye near Ross-on-Wye.

In Tewkesbury, sections of the A38 and A438 have been closed to traffic.

The current flood warning for the town says: River levels remain high at the Mythe Bridge river gauge as a result of recent heavy rainfall. Consequently, flooding continues.

"Flooding may be affecting Bredon Road, White Bear, King John's Cottages in Tewkesbury, and properties at Lower Lode and Mill Avon Riverside.

"Predicted Peaks at, Mythe of between 4.6 to 4.9m are expected on Tuesday.

"We expect river levels to remain high over the next few days. We are closely monitoring the situation.

"Our incident response staff are checking defences and liaising with emergency services.

"Be prepared to move possessions and valuables off the ground or to safety and please avoid contact with flood water."

Further downstream the A417 between Over and Maisemore is closed, flooding may also affect Coal Wharf and Riverside, Maisemore and Sandhurst Lane.

Gloucestershire County Council's Highways twitter feed has tweeted this morning that the A417 is expected to be closed for a "couple of days."

"Predicted peaks are between 4.5 to 5m in Sandhurst and 4.2 to 4.5m in Gloucester."

The B4213 at Haw Bridge is also currently closed between Apperley and Tirley.

In the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue tweeted a picture of a car caught in flood water in Minsterworth this morning.

The B4234 at Lower Lydbrook is currently closed where it runs alongside the River Wye.

Further rainfall is expected from midday on Wednesday and the situation is set to change as water flows towards the Severn estuary.
