First day do’s and don’ts

Starting a new job can be a scary business. So how do you go about making the right impression on your first day?

The office experts at Londonoffices.com  have compiled a list of what all new employees should or shouldn't do if they want to get their new job off to the best possible start.

DO

  • Dress to impress - You only get to make one first impression, so make sure it's good. Iron everything beforehand, and if you're a guy it doesn't hurt to have a clean shave in the morning.
  • Introduce yourself - If all goes well these could be your colleagues for many years, so make sure you get off on the right foot by politely introducing yourself to them. If you want to score extra points then quickly learn their names.
  • Ask questions - Inquisitiveness is a great trait to have on your first day, as this shows your enthusiasm for the job. Ask questions whenever you can, the keener you look the faster you will build a good rapport with your bosses.
  • Come prepared - You don't want to look like a fish out of water of your first day. Research the company and come up with some interesting ideas, this way you'll have something to impress your bosses with in your first meeting.
  • Say yes to lunch - It doesn't matter if you spent ages making the perfect packed lunch the evening before, if your colleagues invite you to eat with them, make sure you accept, as this will show you're keen to make friends.
  • Positivity - Bringing heaps of positivity on your first day is an important way of showing that you're enthusiastic for the job and keen to settle in. Nobody likes pessimism in the office, so leave your negative energy at the door.

DON'T

  • Say nothing - The worst thing you can say on your first day is nothing at all. Remember, your boss hired you because he believes in your ability, and so should you. Make your mark by talking to anyone that you can, and offering ideas wherever possible.
  • Annoy colleagues - Nobody likes a new employee who shows up thinking that he owns the place, so try to avoid annoying your colleagues or acting bossy if you want to get on with them.
  • Ignore instructions - If your line manager, boss or another team member asks you to do something, do it. If your to-do list is already huge, check when they need it by and prioritise.
  • Act too enthusiastic - It's important to appear keen but coming across too strong and overly eager could potentially have the opposite effect, as colleagues may mistake this for overconfidence or believe you aren't taking your new job seriously.
  • Ask about holidays - Your first day is never the appropriate time to let your boss know that you want time away from the office, so maybe give it a week or two before booking your summer holidays.
  • Turn up late - Make sure you get to your new office with at least 15 minutes to spare, as being late is one of the worst first impressions you can make. You don't want to be rushed off your feet, sweating and panting the first time you meet your colleagues.
