Emergency services to take part in joint demo at Police Open Day

Emergency services will show how they work together at the scene of a serious collision, in a demonstration at the Gloucestershire Police Open Day tomorrow (Saturday 14 September).

Police, alongside the South Western Ambulance Service and Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue Service, will show how they deal with a complex situation, in a race against time where a motorcyclist is trapped under a car. The demonstration also supports the nationwide safe and social driving campaign called 'The Power of 2 Wheels', a collaborative road safety campaign.

Popular displays from previous events will also make a return, including from the dogs unit, firearms team and a high-octane public order demonstration, complete with petrol bombs.

Chief Constable, Rod Hansen, and Police and Crime Commissioner, Martin Surl invite members of the public to the Open Day, which will take place at police headquarters in Quedgeley between 10am and 3pm tomorrow.

Chief Constable Rod Hansen said: "This event is a great opportunity for both myself and colleagues to interact with the public in a relaxed way and answer any questions they may have about policing and what we do here in the county and beyond.

"This event is not only a chance for us to offer a glimpse into what we do in order to help keep people safe from harm, but it is also our opportunity to say thank you to the people of Gloucestershire for their ongoing support, which we are very grateful for."

Police and Crime Commissioner Martin Surl said: "The relationship between police and the public has always been vital and no more so than now, when resources are stretched and the workload has grown exponentially.

"Gloucestershire is still one of the safest places to live and work in the country. I hope that by inviting the public to see the range of responsibilities we have and the extent of services we provide, will not only maintain that connection but also help foster an even better understanding."

Highlights of the free event include:

  • Displays in the arena including from the dogs unit, firearms team and a public order demonstration
  • Get up close and personal with the Mounted Section, firearms unit, fleet of police vehicles, cyber unit, drones unit and much more
  • Behind-the-scenes access to the Force Control Room and Custody Suites, with tours running throughout the day
  • Children's fancy dress parade in their police-themed costume
  • Lectures from speakers covering a range of topics, including safeguarding your family , a career in policing and exposing the exploiters
  • Recruitment zone where staff will be able to provide advice and information about the various opportunities offered by the Force

Entrance to the site is free and does not require a ticket. Gates will open at 10am and the event will close at 3pm, Saturday 14 September. Spaces on the behind-the-scenes tours of the Force Control Room and Custody Suite are available on a first-come-first-serve basis on the day. Free public parking will be available at the Park and Ride facility which is a few minutes' walk from HQ, as well as a number of other car parks which belong to local businesses. Parking will be well signed on approach to the event. Disabled parking is available next door to HQ, which is close to the main site. There will be a range of local food suppliers at the event and visitors are also welcome to take picnics.

In line with the PCC's Police and Crime Plan commitment for a green and pleasant county, there will be several water bowsers on site to limit the use of single use plastics. The bowsers will be provided by Severn Trent and will be available for visitors to use free of charge.

Venue address: Gloucestershire Constabulary Police Headquarters, 1 Waterwells, Waterwells Drive, Quedgeley, Gloucester, GL2 2AN

Free places are still available for the Child Exploitation talk. Detective Inspector Sue Fereday and Detective Sergeant Rosie Higgins will explain what exploitation is, what signs to look out for and how the community can work together to expose perpetrators and prevent it.
