Ecclesiastical staff adopts a ‘purr-fect’ cute cat
24th August 2017
Five kittens named after buildings at the Gloucester offices of insurer, Ecclesiastical, will soon be looking for new homes after staff came to the rescue of their homeless mum.
When Facilities Manager, Beverley Smith, spotted a cat living rough in the churchyard opposite the specialist insurer's headquarters in the city, she asked her colleague, Nick Ellicott - a volunteer with cat charity New Start Cat Rescue based in Huntley in the Forest of Dean - to check she was in good health.
Building Services manager, Nick, took the friendless feline to the vets to see if she was microchipped, only to find out she was pregnant.
Through the charity, Nick offered to foster the cat, although she initially had a brief stay with another Ecclesiastical staff member, Karen Ford, while Nick was on holiday. Then last week, 'Beverley' gave birth to her litter.
Nick said: "The vet initially thought Beverley was expecting three kittens but it turned out she was pregnant with seven!
"After three of them entered the world just fine, the fourth got stuck, and Beverley needed to be rushed to the vets for an emergency caesarean.
"Unfortunately, she lost two of the kittens but the other five are extremely healthy and both mum and the kittens are all now doing well.
"We have named them Montpellier, Brunswick, Beaufort, Granville and Fitzalan after the Ecclesiastical buildings in Gloucester!
"When they are about 10 weeks and old enough to leave home, the charity will look to re-home them. We are definitely going to miss their mischief.
"Beverley has already been offered a permanent home when the kittens all leave on their adventures."
Punchline wishes all the kittens and their future owners all the best!
