DVD sales on the up

More people are buying DVDs and Blu-Ray of favourite films and TV shows, according to the boss of HMV.

Phil Halliday, MD of HMV, which has a store in Cheltenham, said "physical visual" sales are up by 5%, as reported by the BBC.

He said, despite the rise of streaming services, people are willing to pay for a physical copy of a film or TV show they will rewatch.

He compared it to people buying and collecting vinyl records or CDs. It also means they can still access them when the streaming services remove them.

But elsewhere, sales of DVDs and Blu-Ray are still declining.

Era, the digital entertainment and retail association, said sales in 2023 were down 18.8% on 2022.

DVDs sales hit their peak in the early 2000s, with Finding Nemo the biggest-selling DVD of all time.
